Penang - Taiping - PJ Trip
30 Dec 2004 to 3 Jan 2005

  Day 1 - 30 Dec 2004
We had first gotten into Malaysia on the night of 29 Dec 2004, after work. We took a cab to Woodlands, crossed to Johor Bahru by bus and went to Larkin to catch a bus to Pontian. At Pontian, we spent the night and fourth aunty drove us to Senai Airport in the morning.

We took AirAsia Budget Airline from Senai to Penang, and we arrived at Bayan Lepas Airport at about noon time.

Uncle Albert picked us up from the airport, and sent us to Sunway Hotel at Georgetown.

After checking in, we had lunch at Uncle Ooi's Yosenabe Restaurant.

We then visited the Botanic Gardens. It was hot and bright, Esther had lots of fun running about.

Along the roads, we were introduced to the oldest tree in Penang:

We then went over to Bukit Bendera (Penang Hill) which is about 1000m above sea level.

The inclined train is the normal mode of transport up the hill. At the half-way point, Middle Station, we change over to another train to reach the summit.

The view was fantastic. You can see tall KOMTAR (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak), and next to it are Shangri-la and Sunway Hotels, Sunway being in the foreground in this picture. In the background, Seberang Prai can be seen, along with several ferries crossing the straits.

That evening, we celebrated dad's birthday at Gurney Drive with fantastic Penang food. As the tsunami of 26 Dec washed much mud into Gurney Drive, a massive clean up has made the place so clean that you can actually see the bricks on the ground! 10 years ago when YowCH came by, it was dirty and black.

Just before we slept, YowCH took a night shot of KOMTAR from the hotel room.
