Chinese New Year 2013

We left Singapore on 7 Feb for PJ and returned to Singapore on 12 Feb for CNY. We visited T.Y.Lin KL office, KL Tower, Chee Kean and Ming Meng, Chee Kean’s parents, the Chims, PQ’s parents in Kajang, Daren’s mother, Uncle in Kepong, and upon return to Singapore, Kuan Pow and Patricia. We met our cousins Lims, Loos and Phans, Aunty from Batu Arang, and friends Sean, Roger and Chow from TYLin, Thean Seong, Sri and Chin Bin. We also celebrated YowCH’s dad’s 68th birthday. And we ate very very much.

Food places and Geo-trax set-up

We had a few rounds of eating-out at rather interesting places recently:

Monday, 28 Jan, dinner at Chuck Wagon (American grill), Portsdown Road:

We had escargot, lamb chops, pork ribs, fish and chips and chicken wings.

Friday, 1 Feb, dinner at Colbar (British grill), Whitchurch Road off-Portsdown Road:

We had sausage-egg-mushroom, fish and chips and grilled sole (flat fish).

Saturday, 2 Feb, lunch at Adam Road Hawker Centre:

We had nasi lemak and satay.

And today, we managed to design a set-up using all the Geo-trax tracks that we have!

This is a rather extensive set-up, and rather nice to see the trains snaking around.

YowCH’s Soundstage project completed

“Infinite Studios” boasts two soundstages of 18,000 sq-ft and 10,000 sq-ft (huge movie-making studios with live-sound recording capability) at Media Circle, off-Postdown Road. Tenants are starting to operate from this new media-based techno-building with satellite broadcast capabilities. Anchor tenants include Infinite Studios, Globecast and Discovery Channel.

Main Contractor: Incorporated Builders

YowCH is the Professional Engineer responsible for the civil and structural engineering of this building.

Geo-trax trains

Thanks to Kum Yuen for bringing the 3 sets of trains back from USA, our train tracks set has moving trains again. Really fun!

Warning to all who own such battery operated toys – take out the batteries before storing or the batteries will leak and spoil the toy. Our original 4 sets of trains were all spoilt when batteries leaked and destroyed the circuit boards.

TYLin Malaysia annual dinner at Eastin PJ

TYLin Malaysia’s annual dinner was held at Eastin PJ, very near YowCH’s parents’ place. We drove up to PJ on Saturday 26 Jan 2013 at about 12:30pm after YowCH’s in-house training in the morning. We reached PJ home at 4:45pm (keeping mostly to 120km/h). Esther, David and Joseph had fun with Yen Yen and Yu Yu while YowCH and Grace prepared for the dinner.

We drove off from home at about 5:45pm and reached Eastin at 6:00pm for the dinner. We met Tina and James (Taiwan) and Dr Tang (China) in addition to the close friends in KL office. YowCH’s colleagues Yew Shin and Swee Tong were there, too.

Dinner started punctually at 7:00pm and ended at 10:30pm.

The next morning, Sunday 27 Jan 2013, we met Chee Kean and Ming Meng for dimsum breakfast in Taman Megah.

After breakfast, we went home. Kum Yuen and Josephine visited, bringing Grace’s dad’s books and our 3 sets of Geo-trax trains, which KY helped buy when he was in USA.

After lunch at home, we went out and met CCK and MM for coffee, then drove off to Singapore, keeping closely to the speed limit.

We reached Gelang Patah at 8:00pm and had KFC dinner, then bought some pepes (chicken otak-otak)

We reached home at 10:00pm. Thank God for good drives to and from PJ, fun time with family and friends, and a good dinner with TYL KL colleagues. A short but very fruitful trip.

TYLin Taiwan annual dinner at Taipei

Tagging along with the TYLin Taiwan annual dinner at Taipei on 16 Jan, YowCH and Grace had a short work/holiday trip from 15 to 17 Jan 2013. We met up with YowCH’s cousin, Wei Lian, too.

Church 55th anniversary

The Bible Church, Singapore had the 55th Anniversary celebration service at SAJC on 12 Jan 2013 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

YowCH was the lead photographer (using the trusty Fuji S5pro) with a team of 3 other photographers (Calvin, Jovian and Steven). For this event, YowCH also took video on a hand-held cam (our new Canon HF-M56), together full-time static cam (Church’s Sony) and a microphone-laptop to record the live-audio.

Grace, Esther, David and Joseph served as extras for the skit of our Church history, and you can see all 4 of them in this photo (Esther, Joseph and Grace on the left, David in the middle):

After service, we drove over to Harbourfront Centre, Ban Heng Restaurant for the celebration dinner from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. All the children (ours and others’) were seated together in a ‘back-room’, most havoc situation. To quote Han Wei, “The doors to the Chamber of Chaos has opened”.

We thank God again for his goodness to our Church.

New video cam, Joseph’s new uniforms

First posting for 2013.

On 31 Dec 2012, we bought a replacement camcorder for our Canon HV30. The HV30 is about 4 years old only, but the flip-screen ribbon-wire has snapped and Canon refuses to replace/repair saying it is end-of-line model. In any case, looks like MiniDV tapes are getting oudated, too. So we bought a new full-HD Canon HF-M56 for a little less than $1000. Uses SD cards, performs very similar to the HV30, and it is lighter. The only problem is that there is no mini-jack mic-input. The next model, HF-M52 has mic input and more built-in memory (32GB against 8GB) but costs $200.00 more, so better not pay to have a mic input which we rarely use.

Samples below are all auto-exposure, auto-white-balance and no digital filters.

Joseph has started his Kindergarten earlier (in December 2012) and the new school uniforms (formal and sports) has recently changed. Here he is in his new uniforms on 2 Jan 2013.

End-2012 posting

This is our family photo taken by Gene as we had Christmas dinner at O’Leary’s (Singapore Flyer). We are all wearing Paul Frank T-shirts given by Gene.

Last Sunday, Esther and David practised jumping further on in-line skates (over the sewer manhole cover):

Our new V.hive glass shelves also arrived on Sunday, two more of the earlier ones we bought, now filled with Lego.

Note the white shelves unit under the window, it was one unit, now two as YowCH built another last weekend. Previously we had 2 glass shelves and one book shelf.

And dad celebrated his 66th birthday over durian dinner.

David sat out of this, had KFC instead.

This closes 2012. We thank God for an eventful 2012 and look forward to more excitement in 2013.

Grace’s solo drive

While YowCH was at church and Alexandra Hospital with Esther and David to bring Christmas Carols to the inpatients, Grace drove Joseph home, parked, then drove out again to meet again for dinner. This is the first solo drive for Grace, and parked quite well in a one-stroke reverse in.
