090207 Hiking at Macritchie, again

YowCH organised another Macritchie hiking trip, a more challenging one this time round. Grace’s dad, Chan Kim, Oliver and YowCH took Esther, David, Isaiah, Nate, Jie Ling and Sarah for a 7km walk at Macritchie, this time over moderate terrain (mostly gravel paths and trails). Thank God for the good weather again. The walk started at 9:00am and ended at 1:30pm.

All six children walked all the way, and behaved very well and climbed up Jelutong Tower. They saw millipedes, insects, fishes, squirrels and monkeys!

There are 45 photos here!

This is the route we took, from Venus Drive carpark to Jelutong Tower and back.

First, the “before” photo.

The children also pledged not to cry, not to whine, not to be carried, not to disobey and to walk nicely in a row as a team.

One of the many monkeys we saw, “beruk” in Malay, good for plucking coconuts when trained.

First round of snacks, obviously some of the children had not taken breakfast, e.g. David.

Sometimes, it is up-hill.

Mostly, the trails is dark and shady.

Here, the children formed a train to help each other with their water bottles in their backpacks.

We took another break just after the Ranger Station (we did not go into the station except for Esther and Jie Ling, who needed toilet break).

Fungus on a dead log.

Here we are, Jelutong Tower, after 3.5km of hard hiking and 1 hour and 45 minutes, at 10:45am.

Getting ready to climb up the 7 floors.

Right at the top, we can see all round from here! Sarah was not too comfortable being so high up, so we moved back down for the picnic.

Food.

Food!

Food!!!

The picnic was held at the first floor, not too high up.

These two almost-5-year-olds went for a toilet break in the wild.

After the picnic, these four made another trip up the tower.

This photo was taken by Esther. David, Isaiah and Jie Ling also each took a picture of the same model high up on Jelutong Tower.

Ah, Oliver joins us up on the top.

We left Jelutong Tower at 11:40am.

Nate spotted a nice dragon fly.

We rested at the Ranger Station, for another snack break.

Gong-gong stretched out his legs a little.

The children were still very actively running about. David had a longer toilet break here.

Shortly after the Ranger Station, we saw squirrels running up and down a tree.

Sometimes down-hill…

… sometimes up-hill.

Another group photo about 500m from the end.

That’s the starting point again, 1:30pm, 7.0km completed.

A short water break and warm-down exercises.

And the children are all still very energetic!

Let’s do a yet longer trip with even more children the next time round! Maybe to the suspension bridge now that we have gone up Jelutong Tower.

  1. Thanks Uncle Cheong Hoe once again. And thanks to Oliver and gong-gong for helping out too.

  2. Maybe we can make this into a regular thing, once every 4 to 6 weeks. Adults need the exercise, too.
