190511 Trip to Semakau Island (David & YowCH)

David’s school organised a Dads-for-life event, a visit to Semakau Island, Singapore’s landfill. It is located at the South-most part of Singapore.

We arrived at Marina South Pier at about 8:50am, and the rain just started. We saw a huge waterspout just West of our location:

We jointed the rest of the students and parents for a briefing, while the rain got very heavy.

At 9:25am, we boarded the ferry and took off in the heavy rain at 9:30am.

Thank God, the rain stopped by the time we reached Semakau Island at 10:30am.

This is the building receiving the barges carrying ash from incinerator plants.

And this its the office and visitor centre.

We boarded tour buses and we were brought around half the man-made island, starting with a drive through of the receiving building.

We saw the baramundi farm, a monitor lizard, and various birds.

When we reached the U-turn, we got down from the bus to walk around a bit and to take a group photo.

This is half the group. The other half attended the briefing first while we toured.

After touring, we returned to the visitor centre for the briefing while the other group toured.

The briefing was very informative. There is a scale model of the site in the visitor centre.

At 12:15pm, we took a group photo of everyone. Then we boarded the ferry and departed from the island.

The return trip was smooth and uneventful, thanks to clear weather.

We reached the jetty at 1:25pm.

Thank God for good weather, a good time of bonding between YowCH and David, learning about waste management, having the opportunity to visit Semakau Island and also to witness the waterspout in the morning.
