141115 to 18 Langkawi Trip 1/2

We took a break from work at the very start of school holidays and ran off to Langkawi for a holiday (6 days, 5 nights).

The map shows the places we visited, and you can click on it for a larger and clearer version.

Day 1: 15 Nov 2014
We flew Air-Asia, the flight being 6:45pm on Saturday. We packed relatively light, and everyone had a luggage bag to manage.

This is Samuel’s first flight! He did well, not crying throughout!

When we arrived, we took a cab (van) to Hotel Asia and checked in, then had supper at the nearby Al-Aiman coffee-shop.

Day 2: 16 Nov 2014
Here’s a view of the small and affordable Hotel Asia, near Kuah and has wifi. We took the family room with 2 queen-sized beds.

We walked out to Kuah Jetty to rent a car.

We stopped at Langkawi Fair for breakfast at McDonald’s.

Here’s the Kia Optima at RM130 per day, reasonably good car, but not very powerful.

Our first stop, Cable Car to Mount Mat Cincang. The queue was rather long (probably 1.5 hours) so we paid extra RM50 per person for Express, essentially by-passing everyone else.

We saw Telaga Tujuh Falls from the cable car.

Another first time for Samuel, cable-car ride.

We reached the Top Station at about lunch and bought some Ramly Burgers.

When we returned to the Base Station, at the Oriental Village, Esther, David and Joseph enjoyed the Roller Orb for 15 minutes.

After the Cable Car, we drove over to the foot of Telage Tujuh (Seven Wells) Falls and hiked up the long flight of stairs to the upper wells. The water was cold and nice, and the children had fun.

We had unlimited water slide rides! For free!

By 6:30pm we left the falls and drove over to Black Sand Beach.

Not knowing where best to eat, we stopped by a local roadside restaurant and had some good Malay-Thai dinner before returning to the hotel.

Day 3: 17 Nov 2014
With the car, we drove out to the nearby town centre and had Chinese hawker food for breakfast in a coffee-shop.

Then we drove over to Lubuk Semilang Parking Lot at the foot of Mount Raya and met up with the Canopy Adventures guys, Ashraff (the boss) and Wan. We geared up and hiked to the adventure centre somewhere up in the mountain. Grace and Samuel walked part of the way, then turned back to the carpark.

1. Rope bridge:

2. Net climb:

3. Rope ladder bridge:

4. Tree with rock grips:

5. Flying fox (Zip-line):

6. Abseiling:

7. Rock-face walk:

8. Abseiling again:

9. Longer zip-line (Joseph can’t do this because he is too light, so YowCH and Joseph hiked instead).

10. Free-rope descend using abseiling method (Esther and David only):

Then we hiked back to the carpark.

After a snack, we drove off to Mahsuri’s Tomb. Here you see the famous beautiful paddy fields.

The congkak display is huge.

We then drove to the beach, but stopped along the way for some Malay lunch, nice Maggi soup and beef bones soup.

Here we are, Cenang Beach. At about 5.00pm, the sun was still too hot, so we roamed the street, had a Slurpee and some McD ice-cream.

At about 6.00pm, the sun was just nice for a stroll on the beach.

By evening, we got back to the hotel and returned the car, then we walked out to the nearby town centre for dinner at a Hainanese restaurant. The food wasn’t too good.

Day 4: 18 Nov 2014
We had breakfast again at Al-Aimin again, then picked up by the tour bus to Kuah Jetty for the ferry ride to Pulau Payar. The entire journey took about 2 hours.

The first ferry and boat rides for Samuel.

After a short briefing, we geared up and went snorkeling.

There were some nice fishes and harmless sharks (about 1m long).

But due to the tourists and stormy water, the sand clouded the water, so no great photos. The lunch was pre-packed by the tour operator.

We left the island at 3.00pm.

Dinner was near hotel again, but this time, the Thai food was great.
