140531 Hiking at Macritchie

On first day of the June holidays on Saturday, 31 May 2014, YowCH took Esther, David and Joseph for a long hike at Macritchie with friends Isaiah and Nathaniel. Other than Joseph, this is the same team that went on 3 Jan 2009, about 5.5 years ago.

We parked at Venus Drive carpark and started at 8:10am towards the Tree-top Walk. The weather was great and we had a good time hiking to the Ranger Station.

We saw some monkeys and numerous nice spider webs.

A regular place to take a group photo, the timber bridge:

Joseph, being the youngest, was naturally slower.

The morning fog looks great when pierced by sunlight, giving nice sun-beams.

The millipedes were HUGE.

At 9:00am, we reached the Ranger Station, and we had buns for snack. Here you see David standing guard with the baton in case monkeys attack for the food. This had happened before!

After David’s watch, Isaiah and Nate each then took turns to stand guard while David ate. After the 15 minutes break, we continued to the Tree-top Walk.

At the entrance, the children stopped to read the info-panel, then we crossed the bridge.

After the bridge, it was the long board-walk with stairs up and down.

After a short break at one of the huts, the children had a meeting to discuss whether to continue to the Jelutong Tower, or to turn back.

They decided to press on the addition 1.0km to the tower.

We saw a skink (smooth-skinned lizard) and various dragonflies along the way.

We reached Jelutong Tower at 10:20am and after a short time at the very sunny but windy top-platform, we descended and hiked towards the carpark.

We saw more monkeys.

On the return, we took a simpler route along the PUB road, here, the older children are showing gang-signs while Joseph is catching up.

They saw another millipede, even larger and crawling!

By 11:30am, we reached the carpark. Everyone was tired, but in good spirit. We thanked God for the good walk, good weather, meeting of numerous animals, great fellowship and completion of about 9km of hike (a huge achievement for Joseph) with both the bridge and the tower within 3.5 hours.

We then drove to Adam Road Hawker Centre for nasi lemak lunch where we met Grace (she worked on this Saturday morning), Samuel, Hoi Hoong and Miriam.
