131019 Trip to Chek Jawa

ACES-YPC organised a trip to Chek Jawa Boardwalk. This tidal wetlands nature reserve is at the Eastern corner of Pulau Ubin. As Grace is two weeks from due date for Baby 4, she did not join this trip.

We drove to Changi Point reaching at 1:30pm and waited for the group. With 20 persons, we took 2 bumboats over to Ubin. To optimise timing, the group then took two vans (note the Pulau Ubin number plate) to get to the Boardwalk. The walk would have been 45 minutes instead of the 10 minutes drive. It was drizzling and the sky was very dim.

Our guide, Mr Wong, was very helpful and gave us much information.

This is a rubber tree, and the white sap is the latex.

We then hiked into the nature reserve, the tour proper started at 2:30pm.

The top is nipah (the atap-chi is inside the fruits), and the bottom is some wild mushrooms.

Plenty of small crabs.

Mud-skippers and a large shell.

Esther took some nice photos, too.

The local eagle and heron.

Barnacles and oysters on a rock.

Flower crabs mating.

Flower crab with skeleton of a sea-urchin.

Sea anemone.

We took a break at about 3.45pm.

Then the sun came up and it was hot.

This is house number 1 on Pulau Ubin, now the Visitor Centre for Chek Jawa.

We then returned to the Jejawi Tower (20m) as it was crowded the first time we reached.

After the Tower, we hiked back to the van parking.

Surprise! The wild boar family came to the van and we had close encounter!

By 5:00pm, we boarded the bumboat to return to Singapore.

The guide gave a short debrief, and we went home.

We thank God for the good weather and the nice interaction with other engineering friends.
