YowCH’s birthday with family

We celebrated YowCH’s birthday at Suntec City with his parents on Saturday, 5 May. After lunch at home, we went out shopping at Carrefour and had a coffee break at Pho Hoa. That’s Yan’s father-in-law with us.

After Pho Hoa, we walked around a little more and had dinner at Gurney Drive Restaurant, eating Penang food. Rather good selection, but still not as tasty as Penang itself. For birthday, YowCH got a mega ice-kacang!

After dinner, we returned to Bishan and sat around for a while, then we drove mum and dad to the train-station at Woodlands to take the night train to KL.

YowCH’s bike, cycling at Bishan Park, dinner with Yongs

Yesterday, YowCH bought a GT mountain bike, black. Nothing too great, but certainly better than rental bikes.

We had some fun biking around the Rumah Tinggi neighbourhood.

Here’s how the three bikes were loaded onto the car bike rack:

Then we drove over to Bishan Park to cycle about and to meet the Yongs.

For dinner, the Yongs treated us to a nice Western meal at Cornerstone, Bishan Park. It was meant for David’s birthday.

The strain of the three bikes on the Isis spoiler was just too high, the 3M tape couldn’t hold it down and peeled.

However, upon taking the three bikes out, the spoiler recovered. Thank God!

Here’s how the bikes are parked at home (just outside our flat, at the garbage chute area).

Updated 6 April 2012: our neighbour advised to remove all removable things and to chain the bikes securely as theft is rampant, which we duly did so. The bike seat, lights, pump and tool kit is now in the house. They even gave us an additional chain! Really nice guys.

TYLin China annual dinner at Chongqing

Tagging along with the TYLin China annual dinner at Chongqing on 17 Jan, YowCH and Grace had a short work/holiday trip from 16 to 19 Jan 2012.

Catapult

YowCH built a catapult when he was about 10. Using similar materials, Esther and David helped build another one:

The lump of Blutack flies about 1.0m, and given the catapult is about 10cm high, the range is about 10x the height. A real catapult would be about 10ft high, meaning this will throw a decent stone about 150ft. With higher rope tension and a stronger frame (glued instead of lashed with ropes), the range can effectively be 3 times more!

Ramly burger for dinner

It has been almost 10 years since YowCH make burgers (patties are from Ramly, of course, the best burgers), but we had one round of it on 16 Nov. You can see the sumptious spread here:

The chicken burger patties were slowly fried with LP Sauce and with the oil squeezed out as much as possible. Then, an egg with soya sauce and pepper is fried round, to wrap the patty together with some fried onions. Then, the burger was assembled with cucumbers, tomatoes, raw onions, patty in egg, cheese, mayonaise and ketchup. The buns were buttered and grilled.

The family certainly enjoyed the burgers, from young to old:

Here’s the cross section of the burger, bitten and cut:

10 Space Marines painted

With the assembly started in early October, the 10 Space Marines are finally done (about 1 month). Here you see the Sergeant, the flamer, the bazooka-guy and 7 regulars all painted to YowCH’s team colours – the Flaming Star Marines.

As a comparison, they were like this at the start:

Home-made miniature trees

Not willing to spend money to buy a tree for about $25, YowCH made his own miniature tree from wires, paper clay, superglue and green-scrub. This one is about 65mm tall.

Space Marines captain painted, Blood Bowl miniatures

Here are the space marines miniatures which we assembled 2 weeks ago, shown here undercoated with black paint:

Focusing on the captain as a start, first step is to paint the base coat colours:

Next, the deep shading:

And then the dry-brushed highlighting:

Finally, the fine details:

In our trip home to PJ, YowCH brought back the Blood Bowl set he had 20 years ago, here are the Elves and Dwarves teams, with a cheerleader each team and a referee. There are 3 wooden spike balls and one normal (pig-skin) ball.

Horse done, space marines started

Esther and David finished painting their horse on 8 October:

And YowCH, managed to assemble 10 Space Marines:

LOTR miniatures painting completed

After working on the set of Citadel Miniatures from the Lord of the Ring game for 4 weeks (on and off), YowCH had finally gotten the last 4 hobbits done, hence the 9 members of the Fellowship of the Ring completed. The details are not fantastic and can certainly be better, but it has really been 20 years – the hands are more shaky and the eyes tire easily.
